Laptops with built-in RS232 are almost unheard of now, except for POSSIBLY workstation-grade machines like the Dell Precision series. Even those are unlikely to have it. It sounds like your best options are: 1) A new laptop, sticking with the USB-to-serial converter but hopefully the new laptop's. This may not help you in your quest for a laptop still having a serial port built in, but I had a suggestion for you to consider. We used to have laptops like you with serial ports to configure network switches, SAN switches, appliances, etc. I do not think we have any consumer models with serial port. There are still a few business Enterprise notebook models with serial ports. The HP ProBook 6470b and 6570b Notebook PC both have serial ports.
